- Research Focus
- My research has investigated discourse practices to address Nigerian-based social issues and discourses. The articles, oriented to elections in Nigeria, Boko Haram terrorism, security challenges, political issues and online activism, project the application of different theoretical orientations to communicative practices – the prime concern of discourse analysis. The publications contribute to appropriating generational complementary theoretical tools to the African context, focusing on Nigeria data. Examining textual and contextual properties of media and other texts, my publications have explored the discursive terrain in Nigeria with specific reference to the Nigerian general elections, Boko Haram insurgency, security challenges in Nigeria, rhetorical dynamics in political and terrorism speeches, religious sermons, secessionist discourses (Biafra and Oduduwa), political campaign songs, family discourses and public health. My research methodology has involved sampling texts from print media, social media, interrogative context and literary texts. Grounded in different discourse theories and models like critical discourse analysis, social actor representation, systemic functional linguistics, conceptual metaphor, GSP, rhetorical relations, stance and engagement, identity theory and multimodality, my publications have extended the frontiers of knowledge in discourse analysis by examining and determining the (systematic) discourse patterns that shape communication in text and talk among Nigerians, with attendant implications for Africa and the world. The articles contribute to discourse principles, discourse competence, discourse access and discourse management in different contexts.
- Pragmatics, the second area of my research focus, has been oriented to exploring the affordances of context in the construction of verbal activities in the media, literary, rhetorical, forensic, humourous, entertainment and family domains. The papers have examined and determined the pragmatic patterns and parameters that shape communication in text and talk among Nigerians. The publications are grounded in pragmatic paradigms and have adapted the tenets of theories like pragmatic acts and politeness theories to reveal patterns in the discourses and texts on humour and comedy, reality shows and entertainment, forensic discourse, family and divorce and rhetoric and literary texts to locate context as a key component of pragmatic meaning in text and talk.
- The findings of my research have not only created choice-consciousness in language users to avoid crisis-prone constructions, but they have also been attending to major socio-political issues bedevilling Nigeria, with implications for the Global South and the world over. The theoretical paradigms in the research have been useful in teasing out appropriate and adequate analytic information, leading to scientific and representative findings, in Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics.
