“A Comparative Study of Costume Design for the Stage and the Screen in Selected Stage Productions and their Film Versions”
The study reveals the structural constraints of the African film and theatre production which mainly include lack of sufficient funds, insufficient specialized fabrics and poor access to sophisticated lighting equipment. However, it also shows how making the best of things and creativeness of the limitations can be achieved through improvisations, ingenuity and folkloric aesthetics. Finally, this thesis concludes that African costume design is a hybridized aesthetics practice that balances tradition and modernity, scarcity and abundance, immediacy of stage and mediation of the screen, and provides a viable cultural and narrative power.
